About The Lumino Press
The Lumino Press is located in a compact artisan’s studio near downtown Santa Barbara, California. In an era of automated production the Press offers something unusual: high quality hand craftsmanship in the graphic arts of printing and bookbinding. The Press practices both design and printing and can accomplish a wide variety of projects. Its design services are informed by a keen awareness of the various historical periods in graphic design and an appreciation for the classic tenets of fine typography.
As a “book arts studio” the Press is set up to produce books of all kinds: from handbound limited editions to the digital design of individual print-on-demand books. Letterpress printing is a specialty of The Lumino Press and it produces printed work in many formats, from fine personal stationery and invitations to business identity packages and marketing pieces.
The Lumino Press serves clients of all kinds who are seeking printed work of a certain integrity—work that has a unique look and feel that is noticed and appreciated. |

The Lumino Press has been operated in Santa Barbara since 1999 by John Balkwill, who received a BA in English Literature from the University of Notre Dame and an MFA from the Institute for the Book Arts, the University of Alabama, where he studied under the internationally recognized private press printer Gabriel Rummonds.
Balkwill has designed
and printed limited editions in collaboration with numerous
well-known artists and authors including Pulitzer prize-winning
writers Gary Snyder, Daniel J. Boorstin and James McPherson,
and by the Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka. He has collaborated
on artist’s books and portfolios with Jacquelyn
McBain, Mark Ryden, Mary Heebner, Peter Goin among others,
as well as with various galleries and collectors.
